Finding and assessing sources

Vem ligger bakom sajten?
Vem ligger bakom artikeln?

Uppgift i engelska

This is the task

Task

What type of genres are these web sites?
Who are behind these web sites?

http://www.forbes.com/sites/stratfor/2017/02/02/alternative-facts-in-a-post-truth-world/#1d4f5366d608

onsdag 1 februari 2017

Evaluating sources

- Find three sources that discuss the term "alternative facts"
- Find three sources that discuss the term "post-truth"
- Find three recent sources that discuss the term "newsspeak"

In a shared document:

Write definitions of the first two terms based on what you found in your sources.
Assess the sources that you used:

  • Who is behind the website where you found your source?
  • Are they biased or non-biased?
  • Are they reliable?
  • What genre are they?
As you will recognize, 1984 is being talked about more than is usual right now. Based on your sources, discuss the following question:
  • Why is Trump's presidency being compared to "newsspeak" and 1984?
You may discuss these issues with your deskmate but you should each write separate documents and share with me.

Canada - Here I Come!

http://www.parl.gc.ca/

To find the information about travel cost and travel routes on question four, you will have to consult some sort of travelling agency. You may look for this yourselves but describe your search properly.

Lesson - Wednesday

First of all, the following people must do the pre-test on Readtheory.org:
Zacke, Dominik, Ture and Lano
LOG IN to your accounts before you do this, otherwise you will just have to do it again.

The rest of you (and Zacke, Dominik, Ture and Lano when you have finished the task above) will follow the instructions in the presentation below where you get to practise vocabulary. There will be a homework quiz on this on this next Wednesday so do the exercises as well as you can.

Use the document "False Friends" that I shared with you. If you didn't get it, create your own (name it: "False Friends - your name" and share it with me.

When you have finished - use Readtheory.com to practise your reading!

News Item II

Read the instructions carefully. All the information and help you should need is in this blog post. At the bottom of the post, I have created groups and appointed times for when you should do your oral presentations. We will do the presentations in smaller groups

Task goal

Oral task for next week
  • Pick a news item (nyhetsartikel) that you find interesting. The news item should
    • come from a newspaper from an English-speaking country,
    • be about that country.
    • have taken place during the last week of this year.
    • should contain information that teaches you new things about the country
  • A document called "News item - Election 2016" has been shared with you. This document is the only thing you can bring as help during your presentation.  Add 15 keywords (not sentences) at the most to the document. See my example below.
  • Send me the link to your article at the end of this lesson. The article must be approved (godkänd) by me before you send it.
  • Prepare and practice your speech so you can present your news item in class to a small group.
  • Your presentation should include:
    • the source (the newspaper's name and country origin)
    • a background so that people can understand the context of the article
    • a summary of what the news article reports
    •  what you learnt about the country from the news item.
  • Practise at home and/or with another classmate!
NO POWERPOINTS

This is a small task, but it will still be used for grading. If you feel you need to practise more before being graded, please tell me. The knowledge demands for this task can be found in IST Lärande (Dexter). We will do the same task again, later this semester with a new article so that you can improve your performance.

Help!

- This is a link where you can see which countries have English as an official language.
- The easiest way to find a newspaper is to google "country name newspaper" and Google will come up with suggestions for you.

Here, I give an example presentation:

Below, you can see an example of the key words I used - please note that there are no more than 15 WORDS on the paper.

These are the groups and times for your presentations:
